About IAH

IAH is an international organisation for scientists, engineers, water managers and other professionals working in the fields of groundwater resource planning, management and protection. It was founded in 1956 and has grown, with the increasing social and environmental importance of groundwater, to a membership of more than 3800 members in more than 135 countries.

We welcome into membership all those, from whatever country, discipline or level of technical knowledge, who want to improve their understanding of groundwater issues and support its better management. All members receive the same benefits.

IAH harnesses the research, knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm of its members to promote the professional management of groundwater as part of the integrated management of water resources.

Our aims are to - Publish, Promote, Encourage, Sponsor, Co-operate

Publish...

We publish Hydrogeology Journal, two book series, electronic and printed newsletters and other occasional publications.

Promote...

Promoting international co-operation among hydrogeologists and others with an interest in groundwater and sharing knowledge across geographical and political borders was one of the IAH's original purposes and is still one of our main aims. Groundwater issues are not always well understood by the general public, policy makers and even some professionals in other disciplines. It is a role of IAH to provide an international voice for groundwater in world water policy and to champion its proper use and protection.

Encourage...

The worldwide application of hydrogeological skills through education and technology transfer programmes. The Burdon Fund was established by the IAH to support hydrogeologists in developing nations. The IAH Burdon Network is a catalyst for improving resources to groundwater professional in developing countries. IAH also runs a sponsored membership scheme to help hydrogeologists in developing nations with membership costs.

Sponsor...

international meetings, including an annual Congress. Providing a forum for hydrogeologists to meet other professionals and form new links and friendships is a vital part of the work of the IAH. IAH puts members in touch with hydrogeologists and other groundwater specialists worldwide.

Co-operate...

IAH works with agencies in the UN system, especially UNESCO, FAO, IAEA and the World Bank, with other water-related NGOs, and is a member of the World Water Council. IAH is also affiliated to the International Union of Geological Sciences.
