Background to the Burdon Network

The Burdon Groundwater Network, originally established in 1989 as the Burdon Commission, is an IAH Network for progressing groundwater issues in developing countries. The Network is named in memory of the internationally renowned Irish hydrogeologist David Burdon, who had a longtime interest and work in developing countries.

The first Chair (of the commission) was Stephen Foster, UK, who focussed the network's activities in Latin America. David Ball, Ireland, was Chairman from 1997 to 2000 and had a particular objective to progress hydrogeology in Africa.

The Network has been largely dormant from 2000 to 2005, when it was reconvened with a focus on helping hydrogeologists to contribute towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals for water. The new Network comprises IAH members from across the world.
