Andrzej Witkowski is a Lecturer in the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology at the University of Silesia in Poland. He has an M.Sc degree (1973) in hydrogeology and a Ph.D degree (1983) in hydrogeology from Warsaw University. His academic work has included studies on hydrogeology and groundwater protection, particularly in groundwater protection, protected areas of groundwater intakes, groundwater quality monitoring and groundwater vulnerability, and aquifer properties and pore size distribution in rocks. He has held a number of management positions in the Faculty and in addition since 1991 has been President of “Intergeo” Research & Consulting Company Ltd.

He has been a member of IAH since 1984 where has been a member of the Commission on Groundwater Protection and has been chairman of the organising committees of two IAH Polish conferences on groundwater quality and vulnerability. He has been a member of the executive of the International Mine Water Association (IMWA) and served as Vice President (2000-2003) and President (2003-2008). He is the author or coauthor of 94 scientific articles in the area of hydrogeology and groundwater protection and author and coauthor of about 120 unpublished projects and reports prepared for different institutions. He has been involved in many Polish and international projects on groundwater quality and protection issues. He has been an co-editor of IAH Selected Papers on Hydrogeology, No 11. “ Groundwater vulnerability assessment and mapping”. He has participated in 40 international hydrogeological conferences and congresses and related mainly to groundwater quality monitoring and groundwater protection.
