António Chambel was born in Sardoal in the district of Santarém, Portugal in 1961. He graduated in Geology from the University of Coimbra in 1984, Master in Economic and Applied Geology from the University of Lisbon in 1990 and PhD in Geology, specialising in Hydrogeology, from the University of Évora in 1999. He has been a teacher of hydrogeology in the Department of Geosciences of the University of Évora since 1985. He has also taught at the University of Algarve (2 years) and in the Universities Charles of Prague (Czech Republic) and Huelva ( Spain), under the ERASMUS Programme. From November 2003 to October 2005 he was the President of the Department of Geosciences, University of Évora. He has supervised 40 scientific graduate final theses and been the director and participant in scientific projects related to his main research topics of Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks and Groundwater and Ecosystems.
He has organised or co-organised 18 scientific meetings, participated in more than a 100 congresses, symposia, seminars, workshops, courses and other scientific meetings, with about 80 oral and poster presentations. He has edited 6 scientific publications and is the author of 12 book chapters and 51 other national and international publications. From 2002 to 2006 he was President of the South Chapter of the Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH) and from 2004 to 2008 he was President of the Portuguese Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH).
As candidate for Vice-President for Finance and Membership, if elected, his aim will be to serve the association, trying to improve the finances and increase the number of IAH members.
