Dr. Ken Howard is Director of the Groundwater Research Group at the University of Toronto, Canada and has over 30 years of professional experience related to groundwater resources and saline groundwater encroachment in the UK, Canada, the US, Mexico, the Caribbean, Australia, the Caucuses and sub-Saharan Africa. His primary interests include the implications of anthropogenic activity on the quality and quantity of urban groundwater and the development of aquifer protection and management strategies using modeling tools. He is a Chartered Geologist and Fellow of the Geological Society of London (CGeol FGS), a Professional Geoscientist (PGeo) certified by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario, and a Professional Hydrogeologist (PHG) certified by the American Institute of Hydrology. In addition to IAH, he holds active memberships with the Geological Society of America (GSA) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
A member since the early 1980’s, Ken Howard has served IAH in many capacities. In 1998 he became Chair of the IAH Commission on Groundwater in Urban Areas (IAHCGUA), and in 2000 he was elected to IAH Council as a regional Vice-President (North America). In 2004 he was re-elected for a further 4 years. He has represented IAH at World Water Forums in Japan (2003) and Mexico (2006) and has contributed regularly to IAH publications including Hydrogeology Journal and Selected Papers in Hydrogeology. He has attended every IAH Congress since 1998 and is currently co-Chair of the organising committee for the 2012 IAH Congress to be held in Toronto, Canada. This will be the 40th Congress of IAH and the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Chapter of IAH.
