Groundwater is the world’s
largest, accessible store of freshwater. Groundwater is also the primary source of
drinking water to nearly half of the world's population and, as
the dominant source of water to irrigated land, is critical to
global food security. Heightened
variability in precipitation brought about by climate change will intensify
pressure upon groundwater resources to meet rapidly growing,
global demand for freshwater. Despite this dependence, both the
Third (2001)
and
Fourth (2007)
Assessment Reports of the
Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
note:
“groundwater is the major source of
drinking water across much of the world… but there has been very
little research on the potential effects of climate change”.

The IAH Commission on Groundwater and Climate
Change (IAH-CGCC) is dedicated to improving our limited understanding of
the relationship between climate change and groundwater resources. To
achieve this goal, the IAH-CGCC has the following key objectives:
- to promote international and inter-disciplinary
research among hydrogeologists, climate scientists as well as physical,
social, and health scientists regarding the relationship between
groundwater and climate change;
- to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and
exchanges of experiences related to groundwater and climate change
through the organisation of conferences, lectures and meetings as well
as the preparation of books, journal articles and popular articles; and
- to coordinate research activities and knowledge
dissemination pertaining to groundwater and climate change with allied
global initiatives (e.g.,
UNESCO-GRAPHIC,
IAHS-ICGW).
Commission
Chairs:
Dr. Richard Taylor, Department of Geography, University College London (UK)
Dr. Ian Holman, Natural Resources Department, Cranfield University (UK)
Professor Zaihua Liu, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China)

The IAH-CGCC was originally established as a
Working Group at a meeting of the IAH Council in Bled, Slovenia in
September 2003. The Working Group was originally co-chaired by Dr. Nico
Goldscheider (Switzerland), Dr. Ian Holman (UK) and Professor Arie Issar
(Israel) and was established as a Commission in 2009. Dr. Richard Taylor
joined the IAH-CGCC as a Co-Chair in 2009.
