Hi all,
The re-formed IAH Commission on Managed Aquifer Recharge has seen some new initiatives recently.
- Importantly, based on requests at IAH Congress in Krakow and ISMAR7 in Abu Dhabi, Russell Martin and I have developed an outline for a monograph on clogging and its management in MAR (infiltration systems and wells). This is a fundamental issue for viability of MAR and assembling information systematically should help resolve some of the uncertainty surrounding this topic. The publication will cover a matrix of topics and types of information, (including lab, field evidence, info from related fields and models). See the web site home page item "publication on clogging" www.iah.org/recharge<http://www.iah.org/recharge>
Please have a look and if you wish to contribute please email Russell Martin rmartin at agwt.com.au<mailto:rmartin at agwt.com.au> identifying the cell(s) in the matrix to which you wish to contribute and a sentence or two. The responses received will determine the scope of the monograph, ideally to be released at ISMAR8. A fallback may be to develop a series of journal papers as a thematic volume. A working group of co-authors will be formed in Feb 2012 to advance this effort, hopefully to meet to review draft(s) at IAH Congress in Niagara Falls in Sept 2012. Russell has already assembled the oral and poster papers on clogging in ISMAR conferences since 1994.
- A flyer on ISMAR8, Beijing, 15-19 Sept 2013 has also been mounted on the IAH-MAR home page. Please keep this in mind for your plans for 2013. A call for papers will be out during 2012.
- IAH Congress in Niagara Falls 16-21 Sept 2012 will have a session(s) on recharge including MAR being coordinated by Vic Heilweil (USGS). Abstracts are due 15 March. www.iah2012.org/<http://www.iah2012.org/>
- Ian Gale has concluded a long and successful career with British Geological Survey leaving an enormous legacy of work and colleagues in whom he has invested. He has also stepped down as co-chair of IAH Commission on MAR, a role in which he has contributed generously, strategically and practically since the commencement of the Working Group on Artificial Recharge in 2000, subsequently the Commission on MAR since 2002. Ian's foundational importance to the commission was recognised in presenting a certificate of appreciation from the IAH President and Secretary General at ISMAR7. Thank you Ian, we wish you a contented retirement. Ian's position is now occupied by Weiping Wang (University of Jinan) and the new Commission structure allows for further co-chairs. We are indebted to Ian's colleagues in BGS who previously maintained the IAH-MAR web site and now to Fiona Henderson (CSIRO Water for a Healthy Country Flagship) who has commenced that role.
- The Commission's Annual Report for 2011 is now due, so if you have organised an event that was promoted by the commission in 2011 please send me a sentence or two on it, identifying location, dates, purpose, outcomes and approximate number of attendees and even a photo if you have one.
