Workshops

2011

NCGRT Managed Aquifer Recharge short course, Melbourne, 17-19 October 2011.

The course addressed the practical steps in siting, designing, and implementing projects, from commissioning to operation, maintenance and monitoring. The emphasis was on aquifer storage and recovery, that is recharge via wells, but all forms of MAR were covered. The fundamentals of water quality changes in aquifers were also described. Regulators and water resource managers provided advice on project requirements. More information about the course can be found here.

Managed Aquifer Recharge for Safe Drinking Water Supplies, Adelaide, 9 May 2011.

This joint workshop of IWA Water Recycling Network, IAH Commission on MAR and IWA Special Interest Group in Water Reuse, was aimed to increase awareness of Australian progress in this field. Fifty people heard speakers from four pioneering projects describe their work. The talks were followed by focussed discussions on triple bottom line evaluation of MAR, water quality and safety, and implementation and integration issues. These aimed to identify perceived gaps in knowledge that could facilitate inclusion of MAR in the water supply options under consideration and lead to simpler and wider adoption of these techniques for developing drinking water supplies. A summary was prepared.

2008

Summary of technical session of DINA-MAR R+D+i project for the study of Managed Aquifer Recharge in the framework of the sustainable development was held in Madrid, Spain, 30th June 2008.

The session was held with the aim of presenting the provisional results of the project of R+D+i within the stage of technology transference. There were eight speakers from Tragsa for a total of ten presentations, finishing with a highly successful open debate, which extended in almost one hour the estimated duration of the event.

2005

Regional Workshop on Training of Trainers on Management of Artificial Recharge (MAR) and Rainwater Harvesting Projects was held in Lahore, Pakistan from 25 April-2 May 2005

The workshop was organized by UNESCO, Tehran and Islamabad Offices, Pakistan National Committee on IHP and the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR).

The main purpose of the workshop was:

Six international experts in the areas of management of aquifer recharge (MAR) and rainwater harvesting (RH) were selected to present their knowledge and to share experiences through discussion during the forum on their respective topics. The workshop was organized for 20 participants.

The proceedings of the workshop will be made available.

Workshop on augmenting Groundwater Resources by Artificial Recharge in South East Asia, met in Ho Chi Minh City 15-17 December 2004

The participants at the UNESEO-sponsored workshop representing Vietnam, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, The Philippines and Australia met to discuss MAR in each of the countries and to visit a proposed project site in the Binh Thuan Province.

Call for Urban Water Project Proposals

The Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM) in Tehran, Iran, established under the auspices of UNESCO, is hosting a Planning Conference on 25 and 26 February 2005 in order to consolidate the future programme and workplan of the Centre within the framework of the International Hydrological Programme. To this end, RCUWM is seeking urban water management project proposals from interested countries and organizations from the region covered by the Centre (Central and South Asia, Middle East, and Turkey). The proposals should preferably be of regional/international scope. The proposals submitted will be considered at the Planning Conference and UNESCO will assist the centre in their evaluation. Selected proposals will subsequently be submitted to a Donors Conference, to be held later this year.

Regional Expert Group Workshop on Management of Aquifer Recharge and Water Harvesting in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions of Asia. Yazd, Islamic Republic of Iran.
27 November - 1 December 2004

The participants from Asia, Arab and European regions met in Yazd, to deliberate and exchange knowledge and experiences on the technical and policy issues on MAR and WH.

The main objectives of the workshop were:

  • To promote exchange of knowledge and experiences among countries of Asia Region and improve the standards with regard to management of aquifer recharge and rainwater harvesting
  • To discuss the success stories of the projects on management of aquifer recharge from this region in order to develop wise practices for arid and semi-arid regions of Asia
  • To discuss the policy and planning regulation in management of aquifer recharge strategies
  • To plan for public awareness and community education on management of aquifer recharge and water harvesting and revival of traditional techniques of water harvesting available

A Declaration from the workshop and the papers presented will be made available.
